“How to distract yourself with Craigslist #483: Buy a Barber's Chair”
I said "wow" and Sally said "Sure!" and then we tried moving it out of the nice lady's house in Springfield Illinois and I said "No way."
Then 3 guys from next door helped out, and I didn't have an excuse to walk away empty handed. The chair is built by the Emil J. Padair company, out of Chicago. They were *the* barber chair people to beat from about 1940(?) to 1970. They were undercut by Japanese knock-offs for half the price and went out of business. This chair is not particularly rare or unique, but it has a healthy case of "The Awesome."
Everything is bolted and everything is removable. All the mechanicals are in place, and nothing appears unrepairable. I'm planning on re-plating the chrome bits and repairing the porcelain as possible. I don't know where we'll put it, but once it's there, I'm not moving it. It's too friggin' heavy.
